Program Goals
Our major goal is to provide a dynamic resource-based environment  for learning. Using a co-operative approach we integrate library or research skills with classroom topics. Activities are provided to develop skills for problem solving, inquiry and self-directed learning. The second goal is to nurture in our students a lifetime of interest in reading and an appreciation for literature, art ,music, drama and film. Reading for the 'fun of it' will be a constant theme We also explore opportunities to develop stranger partnerships with our parent community.
One of our Library activities requiring parental support is the independent reading program known as Giraffic Challenge. Every student from kindergarten to grade five will be given a passport book to record books read or listened to at home. Incentive prizes are awarded to encourage Glendale students to develop a love of reading.

Library Loan Procedures
Students from grade one to grade five may check out books, magazines, Science Kits, videos, audio-tapes and Book-Buddies for a two week period using the Columbia computer system. All children are encouraged to exchange books as often as they wish during the loan period. Kindergarten children may check out one book or a book-buddy at a time and they exchange their books at weekly story sessions as well as at both morning and afternoon recess times. All Kindergarten children and new grade one students are given a book bag with their name and P. I. N. for carrying library books
Students in grade one to five may also  borrow story or research  video tapes (limit one per student) The video tapes are for overnight loan only.
We ask all students to be responsible for materials borrowed and to return them before overdue notices are required. All students are encouraged to handle library materials with care and to return them in good condition. Materials are purchased to meet specific needs of the students and their curriculum. Therefore we ask that if an item is lost or damaged by a student that the library be reimbursed so that we can purchase a replacement. We suggest that at least port of the replacement cost be provided by the student to help increase awareness of the value of books and student responsibility for the care of them.

Parent Reference Section
Parents are welcome to visit the library at any time during the day and may borrow materials for themselves or their children. We also have board books to loan to your preschool children. A special collection of books and videos of interest to parents has been developed. These are on display in the cabinet behind the check-out desk.

Volunteer Program
Our library values the services provided by parent volunteers in assisting students in locating materials, publishing stories, listening to students read in our Reading Intervention Program, supervise check-out procedures as well as shelving and processing materials. We also appreciate help with special events such as book Fairs and our book exchange program known as Book Ends, displays, bulletin boards, and computer task. If you could volunteer your time for a half a day a week, it would be of great service to our school community. Please contact Mrs. McNamara our Teacher-librarian, for more information.
